An updated Disneyland attraction closure schedule has been released by Disney and I found it some what revealing. Usually when these are done, it’s mostly regular seasonal refurbs or refurbs we already knew were coming. But I found a couple of interesting items on the schedule.
Alice in Wonderland is scheduled to be down from Jan. 6th to May 22nd. That’s five months, and therefore not a casual refurb. Alice has been the focal point of some OSHA issues in the past, plus there has been talk about doing a major upgrade to the actual show. I love this ride, but I’m always curious to see how it can be made better. But I kid you not, if Jack Sparrow shows up in a barrel somewhere, I’ll be super pissed.
Soarin over California will be closed from Feb. 18th to June 5th. Not a normal refurb and I’m willing to bet a pair of Mickey ears this is for the installation of digital projectors for a new digital print. This is my least favorite ride in the entire park, and one of the reasons for this is the quality, or lack thereof, of the film used. That said, the Star Tours film looks pretty great, and I still don’t like that ride. Sorry Soarin!
Now here’s the real head scratcher. The Finding Nemo subs will be closed from Jan. 6th to Sept 26th. That’s nine months man! I might go nine months between rides on this one, so I’m not worried about missing it. But what the heck could they be doing?!?! This confuses me because all I keep hearing regarding Tomorrowland is that they don’t want to put any serious time or money into new attractions or remodels until after the 60th anniversary. It’s a waste of money until then because the whole land is going Star Wars anyway.
Presumably that would include the Nemo Subs (word is there are plans for an Endor attraction in that area). Not to mention that just about everyone who favors the bottom line at Disney hates the Nemo Subs. It has low capacity, and is very costly to maintain. Which again begs the question, why a nine month refurb?
I’m going to let the rumor mill start spinning on this one, as the possibilities fascinate me. What do you think? What is the ultimate fate of the Nemo subs??
