Talk about your viral marketing. Have you seen this pic?
The pic has been the subject of some controversy over the last few days. Namely for what it is it supposed to mean. It’s all very “Lost.” The shot of a box, labeled 1952, was released recently in promotion of a film that was being called “1952.” The film is being directed by Brad Bird (Incredibles, Ratatouille, Mission Impossible 4) and written by Bird and Damon Lindelof. The Lost reference was no accident by the way as Damon Lindelof wrote that series as well. Oh, and Prometheus, World War Z starring Brad Pitt and the upcoming Star Trek sequel. So yeah, no big deal or nothin.
Anyway, the debate about the box is what’s in it. Namely, a photo of the man himself, Walt Disney. This, along with the year on the box, 1952, has caused many to wonder if this may be a story about the creation of Disneyland! Not much else can be identified other than the comic barely showing under the photos. This comic is actually the original comic that inspired the Buck Rodgers series. Can anyone else identify anything in those pictures? There’s not much to go on, but I’d love to know more about this box. Like…what’s that blue book? Or the 45? Wait…does anyone know what a 45 is anymore?
So there’s that. But there’s even more to this story. A few days after posting the pic, it was announced that the film is to be named “Tomorrowland.” Now tell the truth, the first time you heard this news, if this isn’t it, did the hair on your arm stand up a little bit. Doesn’t this sound exciting!! Oh, and the film is to star George Clooney! So we have a film being written and directed by Brad Bird, starring George Clooney, with a box that shows rather conspicuously a photo of Walt Disney and a future space man, and now we have a title of Tomorrowland. You KNOW George is going to don a mustache and play Walt, right?
The only question left, as far as I’m concerned, is this. Will Tomorrowland be a genesis story, or a living version of the land? Will this be the story about the creation of Disneyland, or will it be a story that brings the land to life? Think Pirates of the Caribbean for the latter. Or maybe Night at the Museum? By the way, I just love how coy Disney is being on their blog. Their article is more comical for it’s lack of information than anything else. Box? What box? We don’ t know anything about any box? … as they slowly slide said box behind them with their foot.
