Bog Iger spoke Wednesday at a Variety Q&A, and his comments are perhaps the most interesting, and telling, comments made to date regarding any possible Star Wars land int he Disney Parks. Until now it’s been little more than “There will be a major Star Wars presence in the parks.”
Well we kind of figured that, right? You don’t spend $4 billion on a property to not use it. So what’s the hold up? It’s been 2 years and there have been no substantive announcements made by Disney. I was hoping for a land by now!
So apparently they’ve been holding back to see how production goes on the Star Wars 7. According to Iger “I didn’t want someone to say, ‘I just saw the movie and there’s nothing in that movie in this (attraction).’ We waited to see what this film would have in it.”
In other words, they want to hype the new stuff, not the old stuff. And you know what…I never really thought about it like that. For me, I’ve always just thought of Star Wars as Han Solo, Princess Leia, Chewbacca, Darth Vader et al. It makes sense I guess. So with this in mind, I’m thinking this is both good news and bad news.
Good news is that we’re definitely going to get more Star Wars in Disneyland. According to reports, expect announcements on plans etc. sometime next year.
Bad news is that any possibility of a cantina scene…
or possibly even Han Solo or Luke Skywalker
are pretty much toast.
Good news is that Iger was also quoted as saying “we want to do this big, which takes time, and to do it right.” This means no piece meal overlays or crappy re-purposing. I’m taking this as a full on makeover.
Bad news is that we’ll be seeing lots of characters that you and I have practically no emotional investment in.
Good news is that at least those characters won’t be young Annakin or Jar Jar Binks.
Good news is that Disney is at least somewhat happy with the direction the new films are taking so far. If they were waiting to see if they’re any good, and are now saying the future of the parks includes the new stuff…they must be happy with what they’ve seen?!?
I won’t lie. I’m super bummed that this doesn’t look good for vintage Star Wars stuff. I had my heart set on the Cantina, Falcon, and meeting Han Solo. But at least we’re seeing more of a commitment to a full-fledged theming. Last thing I want to see is a half-assed overlay.
What do you think Fresh Baked? Am I reading too much into these two statements? Are you happy with this possible direction?
